I feel like this is not a fair question for a Michigan girl to answer. The ocean is a very long drive away - almost a day to the east and several days to the west. Have you heard of mindfulness? It seems like there is a new recommendation every week to help teachers better connect with their students and just be better teachers. Mindfulness is one recommendation that really will work and can also help you in your personal life.
After a good night's sleep (Monday was not so restful due to being overtired), I felt refreshed to head out to the University of Helsinki to learn more about how they prepare teachers to teach in their system.
My original intent was to blog everyday of this foreign educational experience, but after hours of traveling with very little sleep, and then staying up the entire arrival day, I just did not have it in me to write yesterday.
After attending the National Council for the Social Studies conference last fall in San Francisco, I knew I would be interested in attending more national conferences. Since this year's offering was in "nearby" Chicago, there was no way I wasn't going!
I will admit that when I first began The 4 Disciplines of Execution by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey, and Jim Huling, I could not fathom how it related to education. I have been so numbed to people who want schools to run like businesses that I was instantly dubious about the application of what read like a how-to book for executives.
Today is a half-day of school for teacher professional development in the afternoon. This often leads to strange conversations in current events class. Today was no different.
I decided to try having my Current Events students this year do a Genius Hour project. So far it's been . . . interesting.
Sometimes living in a rural area has serious drawbacks. It's a long drive to major shopping centers, airfare from the local airports is quite expensive, and you can never catch a mid-week concert or professional sporting event without taking two days off work. However, living the remote, rural life has quite a few benefits.
I love Constitution Day. Love it. It gives me the opportunity to wear my "We the People" tunic and have it make sense if people ask me. I get to engage my students in a fun, creative, and collaborative project where they present the Preamble.
